Service Operations and Queueing
Speaker: Prof. Joseph Hall,
Designation: Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business
Date: 27th June 2008
The 2008-09 season of the Global Outreach Programme (GOP) - IIPM's pioneering initiative of bringing the best faculty from top institutions around the world to interact with the students started at IIPM, Bangalore with Professor Joseph Hall from Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business on the 27th of June 2008. Prof. Hall, who teaches in the area of operations strategy, interacted with the students on 'Service Operations and Queueing' giving them insights on how service can be dramatically improved if only small details are considered. The small details? How to shave off precious seconds in service times, making queues and waiting more comfortable and understanding the trade off between capacity utilization and queue length. He argued, doing simulations along the way (about a bus station, then a post office and then a doctor's clinic), that you can either chose to keep your server (the bus, the post office employee or the doctor) very busy and possibly increase queues or keep them relatively free to ensure fast service. Obviously getting both is a stretch. That's why fire stations have the highest idle time and fire fighters play cards or watch TV most of the time. Their's is a service where they have to be ever ready. The lively examples, neat humor and jovial presentation made an instant connect with the students who immediately related the concepts to things they deal with everyday. Prof. Hall's practical insights were well appreciated by the students and he was delighted by the experience of his first tour to India; it was a great kick off for the GOP series in 2008. |

Sub-Prime Crisis
Date: 27th June’08
Speaker: Mr.Vidyasagar
Class: Sec C, SS08-10
The batch of SS08-10 had the opportunity to interact with Mr.Vidyasgar, an academician and visiting faculty at various management schools, during the session conducted by him on “Sub Prime Crisis”.
The session started on a lighter note with the speaker asking the students if they would want to lend money to their friends, and if so to whom, how much, for how long and what were the reasons the lead them to decide whether to lend the money or not.
The students were slowly drawn into the topic when the speaker used their some of their answers to draw parallels to the reasons and causes of the sub-prime crisis that occurred in the US.
The crisis began with the bursting of the housing bubble in the US and high default rates on “subprime” and other adjustable rate mortgages (ARM) made to higher-risk borrowers with lower income or lesser credit history than “prime” borrowers
Beginning in late 2006, the U.S. subprime mortgage industry entered what many observers have begun to refer to as a meltdown. A steep rise in the rate of subprime mortgage foreclosures has caused more than 100 subprime mortgage lenders to fail or file for bankruptcy. Mortgage lenders and home builders fared terribly, but losses cut across sectors, with some of the worst-hit industries, such as metals & mining companies, having only the vaguest connection with lending or mortgages.
However, the crisis has had far-reaching consequences across the world. Sub-prime debts were repackaged by banks and trading houses into attractive-looking investment vehicles and securities that were snapped up by banks, traders and hedge funds on the US, European and Asian markets. When the crisis hit the subprime mortgage industry, those who bought into the market suddenly found their investments near-valueless. With market paranoia setting in, banks reined in their lending to each other and to business, leading to rising interest rates and difficulty in maintaining credit lines. As a result, ordinary, run-of-the-mill and healthy businesses across the world with no direct connection whatsoever to U.S. sub-prime suddenly started facing difficulties or even folding due to the banks’ unwillingness to budge on credit lines.
Lewis “Lewie” Ranieri, formerly of Salomon Brothers, considered the inventor of the mortgage-backed securities market in the 1970s, warned of the future impact of mortgage defaults: “This is the leading edge of the storm. … If you think this is bad, imagine what it’s going to be like in the middle of the crisis.”
On August 15, 2007, concerns about the subprime mortgage lending industry caused a sharp drop in stocks across the Nasdaq and Dow Jones, which affected almost all the stock markets worldwide. Record lows were observed in stock market prices across the Asian and European continents
It was during the session that many students realized the enormity and the seriousness of the situation and how wrong we are in assuming that this is a passing situation.
This also prompted the students to ask more and more questions, and the speaker was more than happy to clarify their queries.
The session was a very engrossing and interactive, and the speaker concluded with the remark that the extent to which the world economy was damaged due to the crisis may not completely be determined as the after effects of it will be felt in a long time to come. |

Personal Financial Planning
Speaker: Mr.Ranjit Rau
Date: 24th June, 2008
Almost everyone, from the common man to a CEO, has one thing in common, which is to maximise wealth .The importance of personal financial planning cannot be ignored to achieve this objective, but then it is important in more ways than that alone for any student graduating in finance during their management course. This was exactly what was discussed and digested during the guest session with the batch of SS07/09, conducted by Mr.Ranjit Rau, a leading entrepreneur and visiting faculty at various business schools.
Personal financial planning is one of the most important aspects of personal finance that helps us to understand how our financial decisions have any impact on our financial goals. Basically it can summarized into a simple five step process ,of assessing the financial situation, setting long and short term financial goals, devising a plan to achieve the goals, executing it effectively and then also periodically reviewing , monitoring and incorporating changes if need be.
It basically reiterates the fact that he who plans, wins.
The session began with the importance and the steps involved in Personal financial Planning being discussed. The session was engrossing right from the word go, and got quite lively as it progressed with the speaker and a couple of students sharing their experiences from the corporate world, reinforcing that how by having knowledge of personal financial planning, a manager can have an edge over his colleagues, competitors and more importantly the confidence of his clients.
The session concluded with the speaker predicting that without complete knowledge of personal financial planning, a number finance professionals and companies are likely to get phased out in the years to come. |

Negotiation: Business Communication
Speaker: Jayati Singh
Batch: Sec A, SS08/10
Date: 23rd June 24, 2008
The session conducted by Ms. Jayati Singh with the students of SS08/10 was a light, interesting but very informative one. The topics covered under the subject were not that light though as they ranged from the types to phases and also the fundamental principles of negotiation.
It was one well formatted lecture that drew everyone’s interest by the virtue of the simple language the speaker used, the interesting real life examples she quoted from her professional life and a good dose of humor that she chose to incorporate into the session.
As for the budding managers who attended the session, who were extremely attentive and participative, the session was diametrically opposite to their everyday class experience but useful as much.
The session ended with a small quiz to recapitulate on everything that was discussed during the session and how it can be incorporated into daily life.to conclude, for everyone who attended the session it was a 1.5 hours well spent. |

In other words, "Experiential marketing helps brand marketers gain valuable insight by interacting directly with consumers outside mass-media landscape". CSR or Corporate Social Responsibility is a concept that signifies the societal commitment of the present day corporate houses. It’s a realization of the corporate world, about giving back something to the society, in which they are operating rather than focusing solely on profit, at the expense of societal welfare. CSR is slowly but surely emerging in today’s corporate world, in a big way and more and more companies are taking it up as their number one objective of existence. Many companies are using CSR as a key business strategy that will provide them with a competitive advantage over others. CSR is becoming more important than profit maximization in the present corporate world.
