Dated:15th Dec 2007

To continue with the legacy of our guest lectures, this time we had none other than Mr. Umesh Arora, an MBA from NITIE, threw light on the topic “Supply Chain Management”. Having an experience of 9 years he said that Supply chain management (SCM) is the oversight of materials, information, and finances as they move in a process from supplier to manufacturer to wholesaler to retailer to consumer. Supply chain management involves coordinating and integrating these flows both within and among companies. He also emphasized on the fact that the ultimate goal of any effective supply chain management system is to reduce inventory. Mr. Arora informed students that there are two main types of SCM software: planning applications and execution applications. Planning applications use advanced algorithms to determine the best way to fill an order. Execution applications track the physical status of goods, the management of materials, and financial information involving all parties. His lecture was an eye opener for all and each student was delighted and thankful to him.

20th November 2007

A Guest lecture on Dreams, Desires and Aspirations was organized by IIPM Satbari Campus, New Delhi. It was a wonderful experience where the Management Students understood the relevance of the Bhagwat Gita in the modern day world. Mr. Lokeshav told the students that in today’s world, we are so busy, that we often tend to forget our culture and although we are studying management but we till date haven’t realized the very fact that Lord Krishna and Mahatma Gandhi were such great leaders. Mahatma Gandhi is known as a national leader but today only we realized that he was a great management leader as well. Students also got to know the meaning of “samarpan”, and its importance today, not only does it gives patience but also makes you feel safer. It makes you loyal and down to earth. It increases your patience level like ocean. It brings a natural purity in your relationship whether it is your parents, colleagues etc. The speaker also talked about how the shlokas have changed their meanings in the modern day context which is not right and so it is important that you understand the right meanings of these shlokas and implement the same in your lives. It was a good experience for the students to know about the things which all of us today have forgotten due to our so called modern day busy lives.

Policymakers, Economists, Businessmen and Journalists - all are univocal in their opinion - India is everywhere. The prevailing global environment and sentiment towards India presents a unique opportunity to secure disproportionate attention towards India.

Mr. Tripathi gave the students knowledge about real and practical work environment. The students were fascinated with the discussion. As the session continued more curiosity was built amongst the students. 26th October 2007

The students of “The Indian Institute of Planning & Management” New Delhi had a Guest Lecture session, which was conducted by Lt. Col. P.K. Baja, General Manager (HR). The lecture taught the students that working for earning a living is not the only purpose of life. The purpose of life is to gain happiness and enjoy the work one is doing. Col. Baja made the students aware of the ways and means through which they can achieve happiness and passion at work. He gave them some secrets of success, the ways through which an individual can achieve happiness and tips to one minute management. The lecture was fascinating; it taught the students that making yourself happy as well as people around you is very important in life. If one goes on seeing the learning’s from the lecture then they are enormous and cannot be completed easily. It also included how can a person achieve happiness from very small things in life which if we bring in our daily life give us and people around us immense happiness. Secrets of success are no rocket science they are small simple means and one minute management is one of them. To become different from others, you should have some qualities which others don’t have. It is not necessary to prove yourself by doing different things, we can prove our ability by doing the same things differently from others. It is very important to have these kinds of guest lecture to understand the basic ethics which we are forgetting nowadays, we all know these ethics like never cheat anyone, always speak truth, help needy people, try to be happy and make others happy etc., but we never bother to think of these matters in our life. Apparently these are the things, which appear as obstacles in our path of success in our life and hamper our progress.

That’s why these are really important to take care off.

  “Customer Relationship Management”
24th October 2007

The students of “The Indian Institute of Planning & Management” New Delhi had a Guest Lecture session conducted by Mr. Hem ant Gelatin, (Director Client Servicing). The lecture taught the students that Customer Relationship Management is a process or methodology used to learn more about customers' needs and behaviours in order to develop stronger relationships with them. According to Mr. Galatia, there are many technological components to CRM, but thinking about CRM in primarily technological terms is a mistake, the more useful way to think about CRM is as a process that will help bring together lots of pieces of information about customers, sales, marketing effectiveness, responsiveness and market trends. He even discussed a concept of Par Stock – is established over a period of time to meet demand and also maintain it, he also discussed the concept of Public Relation. Mr. Gelatin made the students understand that CRM helps businesses use technology and human resources to gain insight into the behaviour of customers and the value of those customers. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) refers to the methodologies and tools that help businesses manage customer relationships in an organized way, in today’s world this has become the best practice to retain customers. The speaker added value to the subject by explaining the entire concept on a strategic and conceptual approach to effective customer relationship management. It was an interactive session where the students got a chance to learn the actual basis of customer relationship management. Mr. Gelatin summarized the session by saying that CRM is empathizing with your customer and giving him value product.

  “Goals And Desires”
17th October 2007

A Guest lecture on meaning of Goals & Desires was organized by IIPM Satbari Campus, New Delhi. The speaker of the event talked about GOAL, DESIRE, MISSION and PLANNING. Mr. Kalian focused on the importance of goals and desires in our lives. He explained the difference between the two, according to which goals are targets, which we keep in our lives to what we personally want to achieve. Goals is in our hands (control), Desire on the other hand is not in our control. It is basically a prayer to what we want. Our desire is also dependent on others. Desires are those wants which we want to fulfill and goals are something we live for. When one sets a goal, he or she should make sure that the efforts made to achieve the goal should be honest.  If one changes the goal then he never had it anytime. Goal doesn’t change, the means adopted to achieve them can.  He gave an example by saying “I want to become a president of AMERICA” this is my desire not my goal because it is difficult or we can say that impossible to become the president of the other country. There was continuous interaction between students and Mr. Kalian where he resolved their queries; he made them understand how desires could be turned to goals and how they can achieve their goals. In the end he suggested the students that start planning on the short term period basis because it will be helpful for you to assess your self.

Shoppers Stop, Pantaloons, Trent, Pyramid, Hyper city, etc have set up their own Department Stores, Specialty Stores, Discount Stores all with a view to wooing the consumer. Going by the well-known adage: "Big Fish Eat Small Fish", one would have expected the local grocer or the Mom-and-Pop Stores to have vanished from the retail set-up.

The Young Speak…
Indian Institute of Planning & Management  proudly hosts the members of Xth Commonwealth Study Conference organized by CII

On March 24, 2007, the Indian Institute of Planning & Management in association with CII welcomed 16 select delegates for a brief session on “Working together for inclusive growth and development". One of the delegate from Mauritius, Reeaz Chutto, quoted, “The country has changed dramatically. Philippa Kehoe is a part of the delegate touring India under the said conference from Australia who is on her first visit to India, said, “The infrastructure has phenomenally improved but I am still too surprised to notice that the basic instinct is still missing.” Quoting an example she explained, “While I had just finished dinner with some friends and collogues at a Connaught  Place hotel when we heard a noise outside of a cyclist in a pool of blood. People surrounded him but they just watched him in agony and not event bothered to call an ambulance for him. However, back in Australia, we learn about first aids in schools.”

Their discussion revolved around balancing short term and long term goals of the nations, role of Corporate Sector and NGOs in creating sustainable models of development and addressing to cultural diversity. “We are here to understand the challenges faced by India. India’s potential is huge”, said Mark Lang, a Canadian who works with Telus.

After a 2-hour interactive session with the students, the delegates interacted with the Dean (Academics) IIPM, Prof. Prasoon Majumdar and the Chair - Global Outreach Program, Prof. Siddharth Nambiar on the current growth and development in India and also the dynamics involved behind the same. Said Prof. Majumdar,  “The prime focus of the event was to bring together young achievers and future decision makers in industry and government from different parts of the world, and give them a rich and complete experience of regional history, rich cultural heritage and quest for integration with the global economy. I am glad to interact with the young leaders from various parts of the country and acknowledge their interest to study India as a fast developing economy.”

Sharing the dreams and aspirations of the leaders in Business and Politics, the Dean of IIPM, Prof. Arindam Chaudhuri, elatedly said, “It was undeniably a great privilege for us to host the young leaders from diverse spheres across the globe. I acknowledge their visit and interaction with the students and faculty at IIPM campus from the core. This global conference will provide yet another opportunity for India to be the focal point of discussions in the business world as companies and organizations nominate their young leaders to participate in this global conference.”

Mr. Alok Mehta
Brand Manager
Nokia India (N Series)

29th November 2006

Mr. Alok Mehta presented an overview of Nokia’s entry and expansion strategies in India. In the past one decade, Nokia has emerged as one of the most recognized brands in India, surpassing some of the Indian business conglomerates in terms of revenues. Mr Mehta described the marketing strategies of Nokia in India and examines how the Nokia brand has become synonymous to mobile phones in the country. While Nokia considers India as one of the most important markets for its future growth, the company has been facing stiff competition in the recent years from Korean players like Samsung and LG. He highlighted Nokia’s strategies to compete with Korean companies and its product expansion plans in the near future

According to Mr. Alok Mehta, by 2010, the mobile phones industry in India will be driven by voice, multimedia and mobile services for organizations. The teledensity in India was estimated to increase to 18.2% by March 2009, with mobile subscription rising to 148.77 million by that time. In many instances, the cell phone has become the only basic telephone link of a household/enterprise in India, rather than a landline phone. It was turning out to be more economical and efficient than fixed line telephones. So, there was great scope for further expansion with reduction in the cost of ownership...

“Knowledge, experience, intellect, wisdom, exchange of ideas and value addition is what academics is all about in the world of management. IIPM, New Delhi took yet another initiative to provide its students world class exposure to theories in practices as we invited Samir Kapur – The corporate communication Head “ESPN” to interact with IIPM post graduate batch. This time the topic for discussion was Public Relations and advertising. Mr. Kapoor showered his magic over the young management students who dare to dream it and do it in times to come. As the lecture included intense explanations and discussions starting from the basics of PR to its application in the industry and its edge over advertising. All eyes were on the multimedia presentation as Mr. Kapur explained what is PR, implications of PR, How it is more credible than advertising. The intriguing case study on reviving the image of Cadbury

by virtue of PR, getting the consumers confidence back, the role that PR played in re storing the image of the company was the highlight of the day. Also there were discussions related to certain companies like Pepsi, Coke, Infosys and Starbucks and the way these companies implemented PR tools to build their image in the market over a period of time. Students really loved the session as they commented that “The entire session was an eye opener for us, we are amazed to know that companies managed to restore 80-85% of their sales by virtue of PR only”. Mr. Kapur the man of the moment commented “It was fantastic to interact with young management students of IIPM as these are the kind of initiatives which complement theories with practical experiences and application in the industry. Well, that’s what you term as a WIN WIN SITUTATION……………….

  • Take up the challenge… with a positive attitude and a passionate zeal”
Gurus speak at an E2 Seminar in IIPM Delhi

New Delhi: The E2 (Economy & Entrepreneurship) Club at IIPM Delhi had recently organized a seminar for its students at its Tower I Auditorium on September 27, 2006. The seminar had a distinguished panel of speakers comprising the likes of Mr. Pankaj Munjal, MD, Hero Cycles, Mr. Suhel Seth, Communication and Marketing expert and Mr. Sandy Hooda, a Delhi based venture capitalist. The seminar, titled, “Entrepreneurship: Views and Avenues,” was attended by over 250 students from the PG Programme, apart from various senior faculty members of the likes of Prof. Naveen Chamoli, Prof. Jaydip Dutta Gupta, Prof. Abhishek Bhattacharya, Prof. Neeta Tripathi, Prof. Anuj Ahuja, amongst others.

During the seminar, Mr. Pankaj Munjal elucidated how the Hero Group has reached its peak and has dominated the two wheeler market for over four decades, even when its founders never had any flashy MBA degree against their names. It was the level of sincerity, hard work and focused dedication that has created an iconoclastic organization. The mantra preached by Mr. Munjal was, “Failure is the best feedback that leads to success, hence accept failure first and learn how to overcome it in due course of time.”

Mr. Sandy Hooda, a highly successful, young entrepreneur himself, who has made a mark of himself as an even more successful venture capitalist, by turning his investments into a profitable venture, had lots of practical experience to share with the audience. He pointed out, “Today, India is the most lucrative business destination as the country is the fastest growing free market democracy. The future of India’s entrepreneurial growth lies in its youth.” He stressed on the mechanism of identifying business ideas which are either untapped or businesses which can be run or managed differently. That would give every Indian enterprise an edge over the rest in the world.”

Mr. Suhel Seth was the final speaker of the day. An icon, in his own right, he presented his real life case of how, he along with his dear friend, Late Shunu Sen, started off India’s first Marketing Consulting firm, Quadra. He exemplified how he had to sell off Quadra to the WPP Group, not because he was in short of funds, but how as an entrepreneur, he wanted his brand to grow under a bigger mother organization. This is when he stated, “An entrepreneur needs to take decisions beyond his own emotions. He need not claim his creation to be a baby and hug onto it, just because he created it, but needs to see how it grows further on…” Mr. Seth preached some mantras to the students, which were: “Entrepreneurship is not about ideas it’s about unbridled ambition blended with confidence and values. There should be three dimensions to an entrepreneur’s life - high levels of integrity, power to absorb the challenge of risk and ability to forecast the future in a more organic and defined manner”.

Overall, the seminar was a great learning experience for the students, who gained enough confidence and motivation, before they actually planned to venture out in the world to become an entrepreneur themselves.
  • IMF and World Bank experts address IIPM Students in Washington, DC
Viewed live by students across all 7 IIPM centres through videoconferencing

New Delhi, October 06, 2006: An elite group of 60 IIPM students, representing all the seven Indian centres (Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai) of The Indian Institute of Planning and Management, attended an exclusive seminar on October 5, addressed jointly by a panel of senior economists from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), in Washington, DC. This seminar is a part of the institute’s unique international program, the Global Opportunity and Threat Analysis.

The seminar, titled “India’s Growth: Surprises, Idiosyncrasies, Anomalies and Challenges” was addressed by Mr. Arvind Subramanian, Mr. Brian Pinto, Ms. Priya Basu and Mr. Deepak Mishra Also present for the seminar was Mr. Shantayanan Devaranjan, Chief Economist (World Bank’s South Asia Region). The seminar was divided into four sections to cover the following key issues: “Why India’s growth is like nobody else’s?”, “How can India grow so fast with such high fiscal deficit?”, “Will infrastructure and the financial sector constrain India’s future growth?” and “India’s rapidly-growing states: What lessons for lagging states?

Praising the initiative taken by IIPM, Mr. Devrajan commented, “It is always a wonderful experience to interact with students from India, as they are well versed with the topics that we intend to speak on. It was an equally great session today and I found the IIPM students very interactive and inquisitive.”

According to Prof. Prasoon S Majumdar, Dean Academics (All India), IIPM, “Our uniquely designed GOTA programs intend to give our students an optimal exposure in terms of how global economy works, how corporations run businesses under various economic systems, how world organizations and leading institutions perceive India’s growth in the coming years. Through this visit at the World Bank premises, the students have gained a lot of fresh insights, that would help them in presenting white papers on their return. I thank both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund for their support in the same.”

Apart from a trip to the World Bank, these students have also received invitations to visit various other institutions and organizations in the United States. This includes a lecture tour to NYMEX - the world's largest physical commodity futures exchange and the Trading Forum for Energy and Precious Metals,  UCA Global (New York) an Entrepreneurship development organization in the US,  Dow Chemicals and Sanofi-Aventis, two of the world’s leading pharma giants and the Citigroup amongst others.

The seminar at World Bank also served as a massive technological platform for the institute, as arrangements were made to make the seminar come live to all students from the institute’s 7 campuses across India, through videoconferencing. This enabled the remaining students of the institute also to be a part of the seminar, without being physically present in Washington DC, USA.

The students at these campuses also participated during the seminar through questions and feedbacks, sent directly to Washington DC.
