HAWK 2007 Basketball Tournament
FW0709 'B' TRIUMPHS WITH A GLOBAL TOUCH!
Some of the most skillful basketball ever seen at HAWK (IIPM's annual basketball tournament) was on display as the batches of FW0709, FW0608 and UGP0710 took the courts in the 2007 edition of the tourney. 'International Diversity' was the flavor of the tournament as three teams fielded players whose nationality was not Indian. There were Sanga Habib (Sec E) and Samba Duocore (UGP) who were from Ivory Coast and Marco (Sec B) from Italy. In the final equation Sec B upstaged the defending champions IIPM 34-24 in the final with a brilliant all round display of offense and defense as they had done throughout the tournament. Playing some of the most aesthetically pleasing basketball, Sec B relied on a sharp passing game and were great with the field goal percentage and rebounds. In fact, so smooth, error free and clean was their game that there were hardly any fouls. If there were a fair play award, doubtless it would have been theirs as well. Led by Daksha, Ravi and John up front, their forwards and point guards were constantly fed the ball by the defense led by the towering and imposing presence of Marco, whose blocks and interceptions in the back court made a key difference in all the matches.
In the first round matches Sec C, led by a scoring spree by their forwards, blew Sec E away 45-6 while Finance I made short work of Sec A 24-9 and Sec B put it past HRM in a low scoring encounter 15-8. The pick of the matches were IIPM beating Sec D 24-18 in close and hard fought game and Finance III pipping UGP 22-21 in a thrilling encounter with Naresh Sharma's 3 pointer in the last second snatching victory for Finance III!
The next round were the quarter finals which also featured Finance II who had got a bye in the first round as well as two best losers from the first round. Sec D and UGP were the ones who filled that slot thanks to their lion hearted performances. The quarters saw three blowouts and one tightly fought encounter, but arguably the best teams got through. Finance III again led by Naresh made light work of Sec D 39-12 (Naresh got 25 of those points), Sec C had no trouble with Finance II 36-5 (Fin II did not score a field goal till the last three minutes!) and IIPM led by forwards Vikram Tanwar (13 points) and Rahul Sharma (10 ponts) along with Naveen Mallaiah (10 points) scripted the biggest win 46-6!
The semis were expectedly competitive but Sec B's smart strategy in shutting down the feeds to Naresh helped them keep Finance III quiet and pick up a well compiled 28-16 victory, despite them having a field goal drought in the second and thrid quarters (they scored no field goals in those quarters!). IIPM blazed away to a 16-0 lead in the first quarter against Sec C, a blow from which they never recovered. And even when they showed some resistance in the second half, it wasnt good enough and they were overpowered 29-20 in a grinding game. That set up the finals nicely pitting the neatest team on display against the defending champs. Sec B started well in the finals and hit about 70% of their shots in the first quarter which helped them pull away to a 14-2 lead. And as the light faded at the NGV courts and the rain started to pitter-patter, IIPM's hope of a comeback were thwarted thanks to some exemplary defending (especially Marco and John Paul) and Sec B emerged deserving winners 34-24. They celebrated in the rain as the captain Dakhsa picked up the trophy. Once again the traditional rule of playing at least one girl in the team was put into force and the girls who played for brief periods gave a good account of themselves as usual. Crowd support was great with some of the most vociferous cheering ever seen at Hawk, and atmosphere, quality of basketball, spirit and quality of players taken into account was surely one of the most exciting tournaments ever. Kudos to the coordination team of Subeesh, Dhruv and Sharath led by Vice chairperson of Torque Rahul Sharma for organizing a great 'global' spectacle!

Basketball tournament
It is a tough game to master, but Basketball seemed to bring out the best in the staff team as they pulled off a thrilling victory over the opponents from Spring Summer 2007/09 Section A in the finals of Hawk—the annual basketball tournament. There was some tough competition as both the Spring Summer batches (06-08 and 07-09) battled in the knockout tournament, held at the basketball courts in the National Games Village complex. The setting was perfect with mild weather and no sun (with a hint of breeze) and some great basket ball was on display. In the opening game Section A steamrolled SS0608 Finance I led in scoring by Rahul Ravindran, with George and Sridhar in support. The IIPM staff team won their opener against SS0709 Section C with ease as well, while the relatively inexperienced teams of SS0709 Section B and SS0608 HRM made valiant efforts. The semi final between Section A and Finance II was a hotly contested one and Section A prevailed in a tight defensive affair that ended 18-14 in their favor. The final was all set to be grand as the IIPM Staff (having beaten SS0608 HRM in the semis) faced off against the red hot Section A. And Section A raced to a 6 point lead by the second quarter helped by two picture perfect three pointers from Rahul Ravindran. But while the teams were locked at 19-19 at halftime, the picture transformed in the second half, with Section A’s point guards and forwards being tightly defended by Amit Joseph and Stanley Simon. The points dried up as they looked for openings inside, while the IIPM staff team pressed on led by center Ashutosh Ramgir, and consistent scoring from the power forward duo of Vikram Tanwar (who was the highest scorer in the tournament) and Rahul Sharma (the highest scorer in the final). Section A got no field goals in the second half and the final score line of 39-21 reflected the dominance of the IIPM Staff in the second half. As the tourney ended, the teams were commended for their impeccable sense of fair play throughout the tournament and their enthusiastic efforts at trying to master the game (including the girls!) was a treat to watch. |

HAWK - BASKET BALL TOURNAMENT
FW06 B bt. FW05HRM I 20-16. Two days of action packed basketball dominated proceedings in the basketball tournament, Hawk, for the Fall Winter batch as the best cagers at IIPM Bangalore came out to showcase their talent. The IIPM team reached the semis along with FW05 HRM I, FW06 Sec. B and FW05 FIN I after a set of round robin matches in three groups of three teams each. Sec. B of Fall Winter led by the able forward Naresh sailed into the finals while IIPM was ousted by HRM I in a tight 2 point encounter. The finals were nailbiting all the way, but Sec. B prevailed in the end with some all round display both in offense and defense. An interesting footnote was that the final stretched across two days thanks to a spot of bad weather and for the first time in the history of Hawk in Bangalore, Rahul Sharma playing for IIPM, recorded two consecutive free throws!! |

BASKET BALL
26th October 2006 was the day for the batch of Fall Winter (both 05/07 and 06/08) to showcase their basketball skills as they squared off in Hawk—The Annual Basketball Tournament. This time because of a greater number of teams (nine including the IIPM team) the format involved three pools of three teams each with the pool winners and the best runner up going into the semis. The IIPM team, Section C of FW0608 and Section B of FW0608 easily made the pool winners with a perfect record. Section D of FW0608 and HRM of FW0507 had to face off in a playoff to decide the final spot for the semis which HRM won quite easily. Section B soundly beat Section C to get to the finals and HRM won a tight last minute thriller by two points against the IIPM team to get to the final. In a hard fought final that at one point of time had to be stopped due to poor light, Section B prevailed…

Basket Ball Tournament
Date: 25th July 2006
Venue: National Games Village Courts
Participants: SS 2006-08, SS 2005-07, IIPM/PLANMAN STAFF
Event Description with details of the event:
Tuesday 25th July was when the cagers at IIPM Bangalore came out, to represent their teams and lead them to glory in the annual basketball tournament powered by Torque-the sports club at IIPM. In a thrilling knockout format contest, involving 8 teams from the SS06/08 and SS05/07 batches Finance I of SS2005/07 emerged worthy winners managing to put it past the IIPM/Planman team 37-26 in the final. They were led by MVP Ajay Reddy whose streak of hitting 3 pointers made the critical difference in a hard fought tie. For IIPM/Planman Vikram Tanwar led the scoring with some tough drives and layups.
At the start in the quarter finals, Finance II easily saw off the challenge from Section C of SS2006/08 in the first match while Section B edged out HRM I 20-18 in a tight encounter. In a potential battle royale Finance I took on HRM II but it turned out to be a blowout as Finance I romped home 46-23 thanks to some stellar efforts from Ajay Reddy and Senthil. IIPM/Planman made light work of Section A and progressed with a 20-8 margin to face Section B in the semis.
The semis turned out to be a bit lopsided with IIPM/Planman and Finance I registering relatively facile victories although both Finance II and section B made late rallies in the game. Once again IIPM/Planman were led by the power forward duo of Vikram Tanwar and Rahul Sharma, ably supported by Amit Joseph and Stanley Simon in the middle and a solid Jagdish Khandelwal at the back. For Finance I, Abhijit Shet led the forward play despite his injured foot and Keerthy Chetan along with Senthil calling the shots in the middle while Rahul Jeewani held his own with his towering presence in the back court. Mathew Philip of Finance II emerged the top scorer netting a total of 52 points including a 22 point game over three matches.
Another unique facet of the tournament was that each team had to have two girls in the squad and most of them played for sometime as well. Preeti Joseph for IIPM/Planman and Devika Chauhan for HRM II shone among the girls grabbing a few critical rebounds and hustling at par with the men. At the end of it all, Finance I was perhaps the best team on show and deserved their 11 pont title triumph.
Winners: 1st Place – Finance I, SS 05-07
2nd Place – IIPM/PLANMAN STAFF
3rd Place – Finance II, SS 05-07
