They play it on the streets in Europe. In earlier times, they played it in King's courts. They have played it on computers and against computers and now in B-Schools too! Chess is the ultimate mind / strategy game and the brightest minds put themselves to the test at IIPM International (Bangalore) Eight/8 Challenge, an inter class Chess tournament organized by IIPM's sports club 'Club Torque'. 4 member teams from each section of Spring Summer 2007-09 and Spring Summer 2008-10 batch along with an IIPM staff team were drawn into two groups of three teams each in the group phase and the top two teams in each group made it to the semifinals. In Group A, SS0810 Section A reigned supreme taking 6 points out of 8, with Caleb, Vinay and Mithun winning all their matches. SS0709 HRM were the second semi finalists from the group edging out SS0810 Section B after Shivaprasad managed to keep an unbeaten record. In Group B, IIPM staff impressed with an unbeaten record (there were 6 wins and 2 draws), Nihkil Jha, Mohammed Usman and Aveek Sen winning all their matches. SS0810 Section C made the semis outplaying SS0709 Finance II who garnered only 1/2 a point led by Zeeshan who played an aggressively attacking match and the composed Vilas who stayed unbeaten. The semifinals were tense affairs with IIPM Staff winning against SS0709 HRM while SS0810 Section C scraped past SS0810 Section A by 1/2 a point in a tight affair. The finals looked to be going IIPM's way as Usman and Nihkil made winning starts but with Aveek Sen losing his second match, Section C had its chance. Rajan Singh put up a gutsy disply and managed to beat Krishna S G in their first game to leave the match at 4-3 in favor of IIPM with one game to play and a chance to force a tie breaker. But in the return fixture Krishna played a tense last game against Rajan and thwarted most of the attacks before closing the game out as Rajan slipped. It was an engrossing series of matches and for once, the muscles being flexed in the IIPM sports arena were all mental!
