  AUROBINDO MEMORIAL CRICKET TOURNAMENT 2008

After their earlier batch had done it, it was the turn of Section C, this time of the FW0709 batch to shine at the annual Aurobindo Chaudhuri Memorial Cricket Tournament held at IIPM, Bangalore. The tournament returned to the St. John's grounds after a year long gap (last year's edition was staged at the MICO grounds) and what a grand affair it was! 15 teams competed for the honour only for Section C to emerge riding on some brilliant batting performances, especially from the player of the series, Sandeep. The first day saw four pre quarter final matches with FW0608 Finance 2 getting a first round bye. The next day the remaining teams were in action for the other quarter final slots.
The quarter finals were close affiars but the semis turned out to be the most nailbiting of all. In the first semi final, FW0608 HRM conceded a few too many runs in the closing overs after having Sec C on the mat for quite sometime of the 15 over match. Those runs proved costly as they came up only about 7 runs short in the chase, as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Ajay Kumar's lone vigil at the end was not enough to see them through. The second semi was one for the ages as IIPM managed to sneak through with a 3 run victory in match that went right down to the wire. Having put 122 on the board thanks to a late innigs prop up from Sanjeev Rai, IIPM set Section D 123 in 15 overs. They started well enough and seemed cruising at 40/1 before Sanjeev came on and wrecked the middle order picking up 3 wickets in 5 balls. First he sent Suchindra's off stump flying with a yorker length delivery and trapped the next batsman lbw. Two balls later Rahul Sharma held on to a sharp catch at slip and soon Sec D was staring down the barrel at 49/7! But Bharath stood resolute along with a hobbling Karthik Y V (who needed a runner) and they almost brought the game back within reach as 13 were required off the last over with three wickets in hand. Sudhanshu Mehta came on for his last over and bowled an over that would have made Steve Waugh proud. 'Iceman' Sid held on to his nerve despite Bharath managing a boundary off the thrid ball. The next ball was hit like a bullet towards cover only for Vikram Tanwar to pull off a stunning piece of fielding to restrict the batsmen to just one run. And with 6 required off two balls Bharath was run out.   The last ball only yielded a leg bye handing IIPM a thrilling 3 run win a dramatic and tense encounter. The final though turned out to be a far more one sided affair with Sec c having no problem in overhauling 145 in 20 overs that IIPM had set. Sandeep, the captain, led from the front scoring a flawless 70 patiently waiting for the loose deliveries and playing everything along the ground. Earlier in the day his smart wicket keeping had kept IIPM from posting a larger total and it was only fitting that he was unbeaten on 70 as Sec C romped home by 7 wickets with 6 overs to spare. Fittingly, after having survived a close encounter early on and having dominated all their other matches Sec C lifted the Aurobindo Memorial Cricket Trophy for 2008.

HUTCH VIRTUAL CRICKET

Club torque in association with Hutch organized a day long virtual cricket tournament at the institute. This was the first time Hutch introduced their new product of virtual cricket in Bangalore. A simulator where sensors and high end technology gives you a feeling of facing off against the best bowlers in world renowned grounds sitting right in the class room. Students truly enjoyed the whole session and wanted to make a permanent feature at the institute. Well over 100 students faced off against technology and the highest score for  the day was an amazing 127, not out.
