GOOOAL 2007
With the John Abraham starrer 'GOAL" set to release and the English Premier League in full swing, football fever ran high in IIPM too as the annual football tournament GOOOAL kicked off its biggest edition yet—an action and entertainment packed competition featuring 16 teams. The teams battled in a knock out format starting with the pre quarter final round and after intense competition for four days SS06 Finance emerged champions and IIPM team were runners up.
The first day saw FW07 C effortlessly packing off SS07 B 5-0 in the opening encounter with even their goal keeper among the scorers while SS06 Finance made short work of FW07 A 3-0. In a tight match later in the day Naushad's double strike helped FW07 B trump SS07 A 2-1, though he missed out on a hat trick missing a penalty in the closing minutes. In the most one sided affair of the day, UGP 07/10 had no problems registering a facile 6-0 victory over a sub par FW06 Finance 1. FW 06 HRM though didn't have it that easy as they needed a 35 yard strike from Atheeth in the closing minutes of the first half to beat SS07 C 1-0. While SS06 HRM forfeited their match against FW07 E, FW06 Finance 2 needed penalties to beat FW06 Finance 3. One save from Tabrez and misses from Sreekara and Darshan for Finance 3 meant a 3-1 win for Finance 2 after regular time was locked at 1-1. In the last of the pre quarter finals IIPM beat FW07 D in a keen contest that ended 1-1 in regular time with a late equalizer from Shabeer for IIPM sending the match into penalties. With FW07 D missing all their shots, Vikram Tanwar and Rahul Sharma converted for IIPM to seal the shootout 2-0.
Meanwhile the action the quarterfinals heated up as UGP 07/10 had a hard earned 2-1 victory over FW07 C. Despite going up early through Samba, UGP allowed FW07 C back into the game with a late equalizer in the first half. But Karthik got the winner soon after the second half kicked off and even Aditya Mathew's penalty miss at the fag end of the match did not matter as FW07 C failed to score.
In the other quarter final, a 1-1 draw meant a penalty shootout between SS06 Finance and FW07 B. And what a shootout it was with all 11 players of both teams having to take the shots before SS06 Finance sneaked past 4-3. Razdar's brave heart goal keeping for SS06 Finance made all the difference as FW07 B were left to rue their missed chances in the second half.
FW07 E, loaded with strikers from last years runner up batch UGP 06/09 failed to fire as their quarter final against FW06 HRM ended in a 0-0 draw. But they rode on Habib's brilliant goalkeeping and were saved the blushes in a 3-2 win in the shootout.
IIPM pulled off an unexpected result in the last quarter final putting it past FW06 Finance 2 1-0, Rahul Sharma converting a penalty awarded for a handball in the 33 rd minute.
With the semis lined up, there were a few glitches with the weather and wet conditions meant the matches were delayed by a day. When the matches did get underway, some scorching action followed with SS06 Finance beating UGP 07/10 3-1 in penalties in the first semi—a surprising result considering UGP had dominated on filed play but failed to convert their chances. A bigger shock was yet to come. IIPM took on the pre tournament favorites FW07 E and the firm favorites were drubbed 3-0 in a stunning upset part due to a brilliant strike from Vikram Tanwar with a Beckham like 45 yard strike that sailed into goal from the right side, and part due to a disjointed effort from FW07 E. Naveen drove in two more late goals in the second half to add insult to injury.
The plate final (3rd / 4th place match) saw the UGP 07/10 romp home 4-0 over a below par FW07 E but the final turned out to be a tight affair with Kaushik's opportunistic strike, as he took advantage of a defensive slip up from a throw in at the 7 th minute, becoming the difference between the two teams. Both teams put up a spirited fight but the equalizer eluded IIPM despite a few close shaves.
So there it was, SS06 Finance were the winners of GOOOAL 2007 continuing the Spring Summer batch's dominance of football tournaments at IIPM (the last two winners were from the SS05 and SS04 batches). UGP were awarded the Fair Play award for some clean and entertaining football filled with flair. And yes, they scored a whooping 12 goals in 4 matches! Halla Bol! Aage Goal? You bet!

GOOOAL! - FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT
The IIPM annual football tournament GOOAAL! Witnessed a keen set of tussles before the relatively underrated SS05 HRM section emerged winners in a tightly fought final against another unexpected finalists—the UGP 2006/09 batch. HRM beat the UGs 2-1 despite a spirited display, especially from one of the revelations of the tournament, Sanga Habib Soro (of UGP0609), a Kenyan who impressed everyone with his role as a power striker and his power free kicks. In the fray were 16 teams who battled it out in a knockout format which was full of thrills and spills. |
