PLANTATION CAMP-SS-07-09
In association with GIDF
5th June 2007
Viveknagar Medical Center

We say we love flowers, yet we pluck them.  We say we love trees, yet we cut them down.  And people still wonder why some are afraid when told they are loved.

I am the earth.  You are the earth.  The Earth is dying.  You and I are murderers

Take Care of Mother Earth and she will take care of you, let every day be an Earth Day.

The most discussed topic in the recent times is the concept of Global Warming or Climate change and how it will be affecting our Mother Earth and Mankind. Various organizations across the world are trying to put their anti Global Warming strategies into practice with the hope to combat it. But will they really succeed to do so?

Plantation Campaign or Afforestation drive is one of the ways to combat this threat to mankind. More plants means more greenery and hence more oxygen all around. A plant also serves as a temperature control unit and generally keeps the surroundings cool. But we, for our own selfish reasons, are destroying trees and thus contributing in a big way towards the destruction of mankind.

In view of this the students of the Indian Institute of Planning and Management, Bangalore, in association with the IIPM GIDF Club, Bangalore, organized a plantation campaign in one of the largest slums in the city of Bangalore, Laxman Rao Nagar. The community comprises of around 5000 huts, with a total population of more than 45,000. Around 50 students from the SS 2007/09 batch went to the community on the 5th of June, 2007 and planted around 22 plants for the benefit of the community people.

It is these types of small initiatives that can make a huge difference. After all, drops of water make an ocean.

GIDF School Visit for Students

With the completion of the induction and the orientation programmes, to the students of the Spring Summer 2007 – 2009 batch , regarding the IIPM GIDF CLUB “ A School A Week “ campaign, the level of enthusiasm among the students reached its peak and it was time to arrange some initiative that would boost their motivation level even further. Along with the Executive Communication Faculties and other group leaders all the students were taken for a NFE centre visit.

These visits were planned as per the following schedule,

SECTION A         - 14.06.2007, 15.06.2007 and 18.06.2007
SECTION B         - 18.06.2007, 19.06.2007
SECTION C         - 20.06.2007, 21.06.2007

The objective of the visits was to give the students hands on experience about the operations of a GIDF NFE centre. During those visits, a brief profile of the community was discussed, also discussed were the profile of the children as well as the entire functionality of the GIDF centre. Some of the sights had really made an impact in the minds of the students. Many more such visits are planned, with the main objective of making the GIDF A School A Week campaign, a success.
