The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO)

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), set up 35 years ago, may be a baby among the world's space faring nations. But, it is competing with the other biggies to set world records
ISRO is India's national space agency. With its headquarters in Bangalore, Its mandate is the development of technologies related to space and their application to India's development. And that is exactly the feeling that all the students who visited the organization on the 12th June ’08 left the campus with.
The only difficult part about this visit was to get the entry passes to get into the campus
Because it required quite some time, a little patience and a lot of security checks.
Once in it was smooth sailing. The ISAC team was very helpful. First the students were
Shown a 30 minute video describing the journey, the trials, travails and achievements of ISRO till date and their future projects.
Later the students were addressed by Mr.Arunachalam, a senior aeronautical engineer and now a consultant engineer with ISRO. He also clarified their doubts with a lot of patience. Later Mr. Arunachalam and Mr.Subramaniam, (the other guide from ISAC ), took the students around the exhibits of all the satellites from Aryabhatta till the Insat 2C series, showed the clean rooms, the testing systems etc. also the students got a sneak peek of CHANDRAYAAN , India’s mission to the moon
In the end, it was a visit that taught the students a little bit about science, but a lot more about grit, determination, patience ans will power of all the people working with ISRO, the results of whose efforts is reaped by all Indians, be it a fisherman in Nagapattinam,

HINDUSTAN COCA-COLA BEVERAGES PRIVATE LIMITED.

Coca-Cola states that "Every person who drinks a Coca-Cola enjoys a moment of refreshment and shares an experience that millions of others have savored." It might sound a little debatable following all the pesticide controversies that have hit the Indian Soft Drink Markets but, there is no denial of fact that all of these individual experiences combined have created a worldwide phenomenon – a truly global brand. And indeed, it was this global brand, that a group of 40 students from Spring Summer 2008/10 Batch had an opportunity to get up close with, when they got a chance to visit the company-owned Bottling arm of the Indian Operations, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Private Limited at Bidadi. This plant is responsible for the manufacture, sale and distribution of beverages across the country although focusing mainly on the southern markets; and that explains the enormity and size of the production facility available at the plant. Coca-Cola, as we all know, serves in India some of the most recalled brands across the world including names such as Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Sprite, Fanta, Thums Up, Limca, Maaza and Kinley (packaged drinking water), with the Minute Maid Pulpy Orange being the latest brand flaunted by the company.
The industrial visit to Coke plant at Bidadi was an enriching experience for students who got to understand the entire process of bottling and how a Mega-plant works to maintain its large outputs of tens of thousands of bottles a day. On reaching the plant at 10:30AM, students were accompanied by Ms. Sowdhamini, the HR executive to the training room. The Quality in-charge at the plant gave a brief presentation about the history of Coca-Cola and the manufacturing process. Following the presentation, Ms. Sowdhamini interacted with the students and answered their queries regarding Soft Drink industry on the whole and some regarding branding of Coke and its products. The students were then taken to the processing unit where all the stages from cleaning to the final crowning (of glass bottles) and from blow moulding to capping (of PET bottles). Students were amazed at the speed at which the process occurred and how the automated systems could be set according to requirements, as majority of human intervention was only required during loading of the bottles and while conducting the random quality checks. On a whole, it was an exemplary learning experience that the students will savor for a long time to come. |

Parle Products has been India's largest manufacturer of biscuits and confectionery, for almost 80 years. Makers of the world's largest selling biscuit, Parle-G, and a host of other very popular brands, the Parle name symbolizes quality, nutrition and great taste. With a reach spanning even the remotest villages of India , the company has definitely come a very long way since its inception.
Many of the Parle products - biscuits or confectioneries, are market leaders in their category and have won acclaim at the Monde Selection, since 1971. With a 40% share of the total biscuit market and a 15% share of the total confectionary market in India , Parle has grown to become a multi-million dollar company. While to consumers it's a beacon of faith and trust, competitors look upon Parle as an example of marketing brilliance.
The students of the Spring Summer 2008/10 batch visited the Parle Products Factory on Tumkur Road, Bangalore on the 6th of June , 2008. As the bus was reaching the factory, a delicious aroma greeted the students and they came to know that they are reaching their destination. As they reached the factory they were sent to the auditorium, where they were greeted warmly by the staffs, followed by a half an hour presentation about the company and a movie show about Parle. Later , they were taken for a factory trip , where the students saw why Parle is the world’s biggest biscuit manufacturing company. The students were stunned after they saw “THE STEPHEN OVEN”, Asia’s largest oven , which was baking 9900 biscuits in a minute. The students experienced all the seven stages of baking a biscuit, starting from Raw Materials till Packaging. After the visits, the students impressed their staffs with some brilliant and intelligent questions in the Q & A session. Finally they were offered some delicious biscuits of Parle, like Parle G, Krack Jack, Hide and Seek etc. |

Whattey Fun!!!!! Radio city 91.1FM
Date: 18th and 19th of February 2008
Radio city 91.1FM is considered to be the pioneer among all the radio city staions across the country. With over 16 stations all over the country, it claimed the place of a market leader. The UGP 2007/10 batch went to visit the station in Bangalore on the 18th and 19th of February 2008. The entire section was divided in to 3 batches and the first batch went on Monday, 18th Feb 08, morning and the other 2 batches went on Tuesday, 19th Feb 08, morning and afternoon.
There was a lot of expectations among the students, since day in and day out they have been hearing radio city in various places so the excitement level rose as they entered the premises. They were greeted warmly by the receptionist and at first they were addressed by Mr. Harish Menon, Ad Sales Producer, who explained in a very friendly and exciting manner about the history of Radiocity, the important people involved, the hierarchical structure, the functions of each division and other general informations about the company. The students listened with a lot of enthusiasm and asked lots of intelligent questions.

Its been a thrilling experience for the FW0709 students when they visited the campus of ISRO, bangalore.The kind of response we got from the students of the batch of fall winter 07-09, is really impeccable. Knowledge about the ISRO team, its objectives, milestones, achievements as well as the co-oridination between organisation line and employees was explained in details. From the early periods of
ISRO to its current generation, how the objectives are accomplished, is depicted with sound lingual skill and zester.The speaker evoked the knowledge of the technology of making and development of satellite, launch vehicles, sounding rockets, associated ground systems, remote sensing application projects, satellites like Aryabhatta, Bhaskara, Rohini, apple, launch vehicles SLV-3 and ASLV and more importantly the 20 mins video about the journey of ISRO which creates their Feelgood factor to any individual of India. ISRO satellite centre (ISAC) activities cover digital systems, power systems, integration and testing, structures, thermal, spacecraft mechanisms, control systems, spacecraft mission planning and analysis, computers and information, systems reliability and space physics as well as communication and microwave systems.At the end, ISRO also gave a solid response to the students in terms of their calm beheaviour and their enthuastic levelduring the visit- |

Students from Fall Winter 2007-09 batch at IIPM Bangalore were treated to an enriching experience when they got an opportunity to visit BIOCON LTD., India’s leading Biotechnology Company, on 30th January 2008. Under the exemplary leadership of Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, the company has grown by leaps and bounds since its inception in 1978. Biocon is a fully integrated healthcare company that delivers innovative biopharmaceutical solutions.
With the registrations limited to first 40 students, there was a huge demand for the visit. Students reached the Biocon Park at 10:00AM and were addressed by Mr. Shameen Lewis (Manager-HR), who gave a brief introduction of Biocon as an organization and a rising force in biotechnology. Mr. Lewis also spoke of the Internship opportunities available at Biocon, which was met with warm response from students.
What impressed students the most was the fact that Biocon had vertically integrated from discovery to development and commercialization, and hence had control over the entire process of delivering biopharmaceutical solutions. Biocon, infact is an umbrella company having three major subsidiaries. The pre-clinical discovery is done under Syngene, whereas the clinical development (including outsourced operations of global biotechnological companies) is handled by Clinigene, and finally the commercialization activities are undertaken under the brand Biocon.
Students were then taken to a visit to Biocon Park, India's largest integrated biotechnology hub, comprising an integrated cluster of research laboratories and manufacturing facilities spread across 90 acres. Biocon Biopharmaceuticals, India's largest multi-product Biologics facility at Biocon Park is where most of the protein therapeutics are produced. The l,20,000 sqft building spread over three floors comprises process, laboratory and technical support areas. As explained by the operative heads to students, the facility represents a significant advancement in terms of technical sophistication over Biocon's existing facilities and comprises three distinct modules - cell culture module for monoclonal antibodies and other cell culture products; aseptic formulation and filling module for sterile products in vials, cartridges, lyophils and syringes; and quality control module.
Overall, this was an excellent means of providing students with an exposure to the production process at a biotechnology firm and the challenges and constraints that the industry faces. |

Toyota Industry Visit

Toyota Motors is one of the world's largest car manufacturing company. In India they have tied up with Kirloskar Motor Company and are one of the manufacturers of top quality cars in the country. The students of the SS0709 batch were fortunate enough to visit their factory in Bangalore. At first the students were briefed about the Company in general and then they were taken for the plant visit. The students witnessed the various manufacturing stages of Toyota cars, Innova, Corolla, etc and the amount of perfection that was maintained during various stages of the production stages. The students were also told about JIT management (Just In Time) and how it is implemented in a factory. Then the students were shown the assembling stages and finally a feedback session was organised where the students asked some preety valuable questions. Overall it was a great experience for the students and the next time they see an Innova or a Corolla zooming past them, they can recollect the various steps that are undertaken, the amount of hardwork involved and the various quality parameters that each of these cars undertakes before they hit the road. |

“Changing the course of profit charts, changing the beats of corporate hearts, we the Euro champs, successful Euro champs.
Vacuum cleaners and their hoses doors slamming on our noses,
we walk a lot we talk a lot, we always have our Aquaguard,
Filtering all our worries away".
These are some glimpses taken from the Euro champs' anthem at Eureka Forbes limited India.
Right after entering the market way back in the year 1982,with a new, innovative product, the Euroclean,the vacuum cleaner, the company created a record by establishing itself the first Direct Marketing Company in Asia and slowly it turned into the largest direct marketing company of Asia. They are the market leaders among the water purifying systems manufacturing companies and today in almost every Indian Household one can see an Aquaguard installed or the roaring sound of the Euroclean Wet and Dry or the hissing sound of the Euroair, air purifier. These are some of the world class products that the company is manufacturing for the last few years and within a matter of 20 years they became the market leaders and also introduced the concept of direct marketing for the first time ever.
On the 5th of November around 40 students along with two faculties visited the manufacturing unit in Bangalore. This unit caters to the export division of Eureka Forbes and some of the world class products are manufactured here in this plant. As the students entered the premises they were greeted with a statue of a Euro champ (Sales Representative), as this company dedicates everything to its sales representatives and then they were briefed in details about the company and also about the details regarding the entire manufacturing process that the unit follows on a day to day basis. The students asked some very intelligent questions which really impressed the coordinator. Then they were taken to the actual manufacturing unit where the students were stunned with the cleanliness maintained and also it is one of the most organized operations that they have ever seen. They were practically shown the 5 stages of Quality Check that each unit goes through , before being launched in the market and also how the vast store is maintained by the use of one of the most state-of-the-art SAP technology. Tye students were thrilled. But that’s not all. After a coffee break the students went through a briefing session which was presided over by Mr. Sukumar the R&D head of the factory and later the students were allowed for a tour of the HALL OF FRIENDSHIP MUSEUM. It was two floors of sheer passion that the company follows. Those two floors depicts the entire history of Eureka Forbes, the awards it won, the vision and the mission, the beliefs , the values, the various models of different units, the EUROCHAMP’S (SALES REPRESENTATIVES) ANTHEM, and the various kinds of incentives that were given to the Eurochamps from time to time and various other things that the company is proud of. At the end the students put their valuable comments in a gigantic friendship notes board which was kept at the extreme end of the HALL OF FRIENDSHIP, and went back with a satisfied heart as they have witnessed something which have definitely made a mark, which is very difficult to get erased. |

INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO HINDUSTAN COCACOLA BEVERAGES LTD
The students of IIPM Bangalore got an opportunity to visit the Coca Cola bottling plant on 17th October 2007 and 7th November 2007 at Bidadi, Bangalore, which is the only Mega-Plant of the company in India. There were around 100 students of FW2007-09 batch who visited the facility, in 2 batches. Mr Shyam, Plant Manager, addressed the students through a brief presentation and gave an insight into various aspects of the Coca Cola Company.
After the presentation, students got a chance to ask him questions on the soft drink industry. This interaction was very informative though some of the questions were not answered due to “confidentiality”. One important marketing strategy discussed during the session was about the shelf life of the Company’s soft drink products. Coca Cola gives a shelf life of 6 months compared to competitor’s one year. The reason, as described, was to maintain the freshness attribute of the products in the mind of consumers.
The students were then allowed to have a look into the various stages involved in the process of soft drink bottling – from cleaning the bottle till the point when crown is put on bottle. This was done by dividing them into groups of 25 – 30 each. Each group was accompanied by an official from the company who explained each and every stage of the process involved.
This industrial visit was an excellent opportunity for the students to understand the complexities faced by companies in production stages. In addition, students got to observe work culture in the company and interact with experienced personnel from the industry. |

Bhoruka Power Corporation

Bhoruka Power Corporation Limited is the first company in the Indian Private sector to successfully commission the first hydro-power station in the post Independence era. Bhoruka Power is the pioneer in tapping the renewable energy sources from the wind and water, an accredited company for a cleaner and brighter future. Located in a place called Hemmige village in the Mysore district, which is aroung 40 kms away from Mysore. The place itself signifies the peaceful operation of the factory. Bhoruka Power Plant is also very well known for its CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives in around the factory. Thousands of people from the less priviledged strata of the society are getting benefited from these initiatives.
On the 5th of October, 2007, an Industrial Trip was organized for the students of the Fall Winter 2007/09 batch to this plant. The scheduled departure time was 7:00AM,but the campus was already bustling with students by aroung 06:30AM.
After a straineous 5 hrs drive we ultimately reached our destination. The students were amused by the scenary surrounding the factory. The Factory was located on the banks of the river kavery, with green forests and agricultural lands surrounding it. The students were divided into two groups,each group was led by a senior supervisor. First they entered the dynamo room and the students were greeted with 3 gigantic dynamos and the glitter of amusement and enthusiasm was already showing in their eyes. Then the students were taken to the control room,where the functions of each of the apparatus were clearly explained to the students by their respecteive supervisors. Finally they were taken to the main production room where they were delighted by what they saw.
For most of them it was the first of its kind experience and for many it was a great learning experience,whatever be the case,it was a real hard core factory experience for the students,be it the deafening sounds of the dynamos or be it the extreme heat in the production room. |

Toyota
Date: 1st July 2005
Industry visit organised for students studing under the PGP program. Students were given a guided tour of the Bidadi plant of Toyota Kirloskar Motors, wherein they were held awe struck by the gleaming Corrollas and Innovas! Students were given an indepth understanding of the functoning of the manufacturing plant, the assembly line units and even the shifts that the workers follow. The implementation of the principles of Toyota was also pointed out.
Reva

Industry visit organised for students studying under the UGP program. Students had an opportunity to see and appreciate how Reva manufactures it eco-friendly cars. They were given an in-depth understanding of the functioning of the NGVs that Reva manufacturesThey were also shown models of cars which Reva was yet to launch in the market.

Radio City
Date: 2nd Feburary 2004
As part of their mass communication course, the students of the UGP batch 2003/06 were taken on a guided tour of the Radio City studios at Residency Road in bangalore. The students had the opportunity to see how FM radio broadcasting and programming typically works and also chatted up with Bangalore's leading RJs Darius Sonawala, Jauncie and Sunaina Lal. The insights helped the students appreciate the kind of influence and interaction mass media facilitates.
