  PING PONG 2008

A judicious mix of aggressive and patient play, Vilas Rajappan established himself as the new kid on IIPM's TT block as he won the men's singles title at the Ping Pong 2008 championship, the TT tournament powered by IIPM's sports club - Torque. Vilas followed that up with a win in the men's doubles as well where he and Mohan Dhanraj of Spring Summer 2008/10 swept past Amith Sharma and Madhukar P of Spring Summer 2007/09 in straight sets in the finals. The men's singles finals was a bit of an anti climax as Vilas won by walkover over Nijkhil Jha who had to withdraw because of a personal exigency. But it would be hard to argue against Vilas's pedigree as champion which he established in the quarter finals when he knocked out the reigning champion Vaibhav Aditya of Spring Summer 2007/09 in straight sets. He then beat Mohan in the semis in straight sets (11-6, 11-8, 11-6) while Nikhil fought a gritty battle against the composed Amit Sharma and beat him 6-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-8 despite dropping the first set. In the doubles too the pecking order changed as Vilas and Mohan teamed up to be a formidable combination that eased their way to the title. In the mixed doubles event, there was a tight final between the pair of Mohan Dhanraj/Aditi Sinha from Section B of SS08/10 and Mohammed Usman / Shradha Nanavaty from IIPM but Shradha and Usman held their nerves and their serves in the final set to wrap up the title. They were leading 2 sets to love but Mohan and Aditi engineered a resurgence with some well played points before they ran out of luck in the final set. Earlier Usman and Nikhil had been knocked out in a tight match in the men's doubles semi final by Mohan and Vilas.
