“Is our Indian Stock Market Matured?”

Ms.Varsha, (IInd year, UGP/06-09 batch) had given a beautiful opening to the event as she gave the welcome speech and did the introduction of all the panelists with a bouquet. This was followed by a very informative lecture on the evolution of Indian Capital market from 1857 till today and it was given by one of our panelist Mr. Ramanathan who is the Former Executive Director of Madras Stock Exchange.
After the perfect beginning to the evening, Prof.Syed Ahmed who was moderator of the panel discussion had started with the display of opinion poll results conducted by Club Finex in association with ICMR Chennai. This pre-event opinion poll was conducted amongst a different mix of respondents viz., fund managers, market analysts, retail investors, traders and students etc. The objective of the poll was to find out whether Sensex can survive without FIIs or not? In all, a total of nine questions were asked to find out Market’s self-reliance, FII contribution and longevity of these investments, valuations, fluctuations, saturation point, Favoritism & future projections.
The discussion had caught up with the real-high momentum once when the poll results were shown and questions started pouring in from the students.

Topic:                  Management of Foreign Exchange Reserves

Event Description with details of the event:
CLUB FINEX
With the Indian Economy booming and its forex reserves soaring to a mind boggling all time high of 212 billion dollars, the Club Finex of IIPM had organized a very informative session on “Managing Foreign Exchange Reserves”. Amongst us was Mr. R. Jayaraman, Ex. - GM of Bank of Baroda, a very highly educated and experienced gentleman who has extensive knowledge on this topic and professionally offers advisory services to corporate regarding the same.

A few of the highlighted points delivered by him in the seminar were:

  • What is Foreign Exchange Reserve?
  • Need for forex reserves
  • Sources and present requirement of forex reserves
  • RBI’s policies regarding forex reserves
  • Management of forex reserves

With respect to the above points he also laid stress as to how the Indian Economy transformed from a state of acute shortage to a hefty surplus with respect to its forex reserves. Also pointing out the developments in other South East Asian countries like China & Singapore, which have to be taken as an example in efficient management of reserves for the betterment of infrastructural facilities that are highly deficient in the Indian Economy.

Apart from the above, he also threw light on the valuation of exchange rates between different currencies and how the sudden rupee appreciation has affected the exports from India and what would be its impact in the long run.

Ms. Sneha (Event Co-ordinator) from Section – B has done the introduction of the speaker, the memento was given by Prof. Bala Murali and the Vote of Thanks was delivered by Mr.Rahul Singhvi (Secretary) from Section - A. Club Finex aims to organize numerous sessions of this sort to keep you abreast of the latest developments in our economy.

Participants:                         SS/05-07 & SS/06-08
Chief Guest/Guest of Honor:   Prof. Sudhir Kumar

Event Description with details of the event:

Never pay in cash; never tell the truth; never play by the rules;

They may look like Polite, well-dressed businessmen, but listen hard and you can hear the pounding of BABARIANS AT THE GATE…On 23rd February 2007, IIPM Chennai students had witnessed such white-collared businessmen who are professionals for namesake but barbaric in their business practice. Finex club of IIPM Chennai had screened this film on a succession after the overwhelming screening response of the movie ‘The Wall Street’ from the students. Prof.R.Krishnan (Dean-Academics) had praised the idea of learning finance thru movies. All credits to Prof.Sudhir Kumar (Guest Faculty-IIPM) who had not only recommended this idea but also supported us with the DVD of this movie and finally had an interactive session with the students to clear their queries. Students felt that, this experience was an eye-opener for them on increasing Leveraged Buyouts (LBOs) taking place across the globe.

Movie Review:
This made-for-TV film by HBO mainly centers on Mr.F.Ross Johnson, the CEO of RJR Nabisco with plans to buy out the rest of the Nabisco shareholders. One of the reasons Johnson is trying to buy the company is due to the likely market failure of the company's smokeless cigarette called Premier. The opposition to Johnson’s bid for the company is one of the pioneers of the LBOs Henry Kravis and his cousin George R. Roberts. Kravis was the first person Johnson talked to about doing the LBO, and feels betrayed after learning that Johnson wants to do the deal with another firm, American Express's former Shearson Lehman Hutton division. Ted Forstmann and his Forssmann Little buyout firm also played a prominent role. After Kravis and Johnson are unable to reconcile their differences, a bidding war takes place which Johnson will eventually lose. The unfortunate side effect of the augmented buyout price to the shareholders is the creation of a worrying level of debt for the company

‘Greed is good’ – endorsed by FINEX club & Wall Street

On 28th November 2006, Finex club of IIPM Chennai gave a bizarre experience to the students of SS/05-07, SS/06-08 & FW/06-08 batches of exposing them to the concept of insider trading (a strategy adopted to manipulate the share price of a firm) by screening a movie called “Wall Street” in the classroom itself. The idea of learning-thru-movie was suggested by one of our external faculty members Prof.Sudhir Kumar to Prof.R.Krishnan Dean – Academics who then approved the idea without wasting a second. The movie gave the students a real-time exposure as to how trading in stock markets can be exploited to the core by businessmen. WALL STREET is a riveting, testosterone-fueled tour of the Street's upper echelons, featuring standout performances by Michael Douglas and Martin Sheen. Oliver Stone (the director of the movie) opened fire on the greed decade of the 1980s with this morality tale set on Wall Street. Overall, the movie was well received and well appreciated by the students as it was followed by a smart review by Prof.Sudhir Kumar to clear their doubts. The club chair-person Prof.J.Syed Ahmed had honoured the guest at the end and appreciated his efforts and motivated the students for similar drills in the future.
