  Preamble
IIPM’s unique instrument for international exposure to students has been conceived as the much–acclaimed Global Opportunity and Threat Analysis (GOTA) programme, way back in 1997. The primary objective of the programme has always been to provide IIPM students with unparalleled international exposure to the various functional aspects of global corporations by creating an active engagement at various levels with apex world-class organizations in developed nations, particularly Europe. It comprises seminars and classes conducted by professionals, business heads, experts, high-profile consultants and academicians with exceptional knowledge, expertise and brilliant academic backgrounds. It results in the cementing of global perspective of management theories, principles and best practices. The idea is to make students aware of how a truly global economy works and also to bring a fresh outlook to life conducive to entrepreneurial learning.

Destinations
Frankfurt, Helsinki and Stockholm were the 3 destinations visited by the group of 87 students from the batch of Post Graduate Programme Fall-Winter & Spring-Summer 2007-09.

Visits & Group Details
Group A comprising 41 students arrived at Frankfurt Airport via Mumbai on 24th March, 2008 and checked in at Express by Holiday Inn at Frankfurt-Messe, where they stayed until April 6th. The 46 students of Group B arrived on 27th March and stayed at Express by Holiday Inn at Frankfurt-Airport, and then at Cruise Café Mannheim, until April 8th. After exciting sessions at Deutche Boerse, Deutsche Bank, SBI International, European Central Bank, Opel, Deutsche Bundesbank, Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Fraport, the groups had some wonderful sight-seeing at Finland. They were put up at The Scandic Hotel, Helsinki, wherefrom there was a breathtaking cruise and guided tour to Stockholm, Sweden via the most entertaining leisurely sea-ride on board the Viking Line Cruise, before returning to Chennai, India on 11th / 14th April.

1. Deutche Boerse
The corporate international exposure kicked off on Friday, March 28, 2008 with an excursion to Deutche Boerse at Boersenplatz, which was indeed very lively with a breathtaking tour of the high-tech stock exchange. Going to this venue in financial capital of Europe made a lot of sense. The manner in which Ms. Sooky Park presented this session was very interesting.

This is what Ms. Park had to comment about the IIPM students from Chennai: “They are very interested and bring a lot of knowledge with them”.

2. Deutsche Bank:
The second session at Deutsche Bank on 28th March, was at Junghofstrasse and focused on the BFSI sector. The growth story of how this leading German bank has emerged as a global player was very enriching. It served as an excellent exposure to the banking sector in the current globalized scenario. The presenter delivered it superbly!

IIPM students from Chennai were described by Ms. Corinna Fernando, the Vice President – Communications, Deutsche Bank AG, as “very friendly and open, very interested in Deutsche Bank”.

3. SBI International:
The presentation on SBI International on 31st March, 2008 at Haus der Jugend, on the topic, “SBI on Foreign Shores”, provided a very good insight into the challenges facing SBI in Germany and also addressed the issue of cultural exposure. This academic tour helped the students understand the hurdles and bottlenecks for the Indian banking giant in foreign territory.

Mr. Packirisamy, the CEO was fluent and confident in his delivery. He described the IIPM students of Chennai as “very attentive, extremely well behaved and interested in the subject of discussion”.

4. European Central Bank:
On 31st March itself, the workshop on European Central Bank (ECB) at their premises in Kaiserstrasse, Frankfurt am Main, provided wonderful exposure to the European banking system. It was very relevant for the students in comprehending the global financial system.

Ms. Eszter Miltenyi presented it very well indeed. She described the best part of the interaction with the IIPM students was “very nice questions and good dialogue”.

5. Opel:
A visit that really excited all the students and particularly the auto-freaks was the terrific industrial tour to the production shop floor in Opel’s automated factory in Russelsheim on 1st April, 2008. It served as a brilliant world class exposure to best manufacturing practices for the truly robotized automotive giant. In the current age of technological advancement, it happens to be a very relevant visit giving practical exposure. The tour guide navigated us through the factory wonderfully.

6. Deutsche Bundesbank:
The visit to Deutsche Bundesbank on 3rd April, 2008 provided an insightful exposure to the German Central Bank’s role within the Euro system. It allowed students to compare with RBI’s cash management, monetary policy & banking supervision, for example. Ms. Julia Rossmann made an engaging, lively presentation.

Ms. Rossmann said that the students listened very interested. She expressed the following opinion on the initiative of IIPM to such corporate interactions: “I think it is a good idea to expose students to such corporate interactions to support international cooperation”.

It was a rare privilege for the students to listen to Mr. Ajit Kumar, Consul General for India on Indo-German relations, international trade, investments, partnerships, and the role of the Consulate.

7. Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Frankfurt:
The visit to Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CCI), Frankfurt on 4th April, 2008 was very insightful. Here, student could attain a good grasp of the Chamber’s activities. It was a relevant, informative session because it allowed students to compare CCI’s role with the role played by CII in India. Ms. Sonja Grutschnig made a very nice presentation on CCI, Frankfurt.

Ms. Grutschnig described the IIPM students from Chennai as “Very disciplined and very interested”.

8. Fraport:
The last business meeting on 4th April, 2008 was a breathtaking tour of Fraport, the Frankfurt Airport Authority that manages & administers the airport. It was both interesting and relevant – since Fraport manages & consults for key airports in India. The tour guide showed us around the airport, very well.

Sight-seeing at Helsinki and Cruise to Stockholm

The groups discovered the beauty of Europe on the free days in Frankfurt, as well as during their wonderful sight-seeing tour at Finland. The breathtaking cruise from Helsinki and guided tour of Stockholm in Sweden on board the Viking Line Cruise, were really enjoyable!

Summing Up
All in all, IIPM’s GOTA tour from Chennai to Frankfurt, Helsinki and Stockholm was an exciting exposition to the enchanting world of international planning, management and entrepreneurship in the following flavours - international finance, international economics, international marketing, international human resources, international culture, international business, international trade and international best practices! Undoubtedly it was an unparalleled world-class exposure to all IIPM the students.

No wonder, a glance at the unanimously positive students’ feedback amazingly reinforces this!

IIPM-Chennai’s Gota Tour to London commenced on 18th March and ended on 29th March. 51 students from both SS/FW/06-08 were part of the tour. For many students it was their first visit to a foreign country and getting such an academic, corporate and cultural exposure was a huge opportunity for them. We attended seven great sessions on different topics which I am sure will benefit our students enormously and transform them into better and more knowledgeable bare footed managers.

Generally it is cold during this time of the year in London, but braving the chillness, our students were on time for every meeting thus proving the level of enthusiasm which they had. Their active participation and enthusiasm during the Q&A round also proved their eagerness to learn more and more.

We attended meetings/lectures from eminent speakers from companies like Oxfam, GSM Associates, British Telecom, IBM, Citigroup, Espirit Capital Partner & South Thames College at the beautiful LSE’s auditorium. The session which was most liked was by Mr. Jay Ramarajan from GSM Association who spoke on Corporate Governance and he was undoubtedly the best speaker along with Mr.A.Basu from Citigroup who spoke on Product Development and Management.

This academic and corporate training will give IIPM students the first hand exposure to foreign faculties, the way the organizations work there along with the state of economy of that country. This tour I am sure definitely will develop new, fresh perspective and outlook from our students which will be beneficial for them at their work place.

The PGP/SS/FW/05-07 batch of IIPM recently visited Switzerland on their GOTA (Global Opportunity & Threat Analysis) trip. The 10 day visit was a very informative one for this batch. Besides being exposed to international organizations and their work ethics, they also got to build relationships. The visit to the Serono enlightened the students about the pharmaceutical industry as well as some inputs on the Indian perspective. Mr. Philip Edward of the renowned UBS led the audience into a deep understanding of private banking and investments. Most exciting of all was the tour of the UNO. Students were overwhelmed at the fact that their feet were planted on those same grounds where some of the most important decisions of the world have been made. However, fun was also a part of the agenda. A visit to Gstaad by Switzerland’s famous Golden Pass Panaromic Train, boat rides on the lakes of Zurich, getting a feel of the night life and not to forget …..loads of shopping was also done. A taste of Switzerland’s breathtaking view was experienced at Mt. Titlis, which is at a height of 10600 feet. They also covered Zurich, Luzern, Lausanne, Berne, Geneva and a few quaint little towns. And just as hearts fell at the thought of leaving Switzerland, the thrilling desert safari at Doha was a good end to the trip which everyone will cherish forever!!
