He has got extensive exposure to Retail Banking and Corporate Banking. He has done IT implementation in all areas and has been actively involved in development of IT based Banking products. The lecture covered four main areas on high value marketing namely Value Driven Strategy, Adoption of Market Oriented Culture, Building Customer Loyalty and Focus on Good Profits. “The Union Budget 2008/2009: Is There Any Inclusive Intent?”

E2 Club of IIPM; Chennai has conducted a Colloquium on 29th of March on “Union Budget 2008-09: Is there any inclusive intent?” The elite panel of guest speakers consisted of Dr.R.Swaminathan; IAS (Retd.) Formerly Secretary, Board of Directors, Asian Development Bank, Mr.B.S.Raghavan; IAS (Retd.), Former policy adviser to UN (FAO) and former Chief Secretary to Govt. of West Bengal and Tripura, Prof. S. Radhakrishnan; Managing Trustee, Institute of Economic Education; Mr. M.R.Venkatesh; Chartered Accountant and Economic Analyst.
The event started off with the welcoming of the honorable speakers with a bouquet, followed by the lighting of the ‘Lamp of Knowledge’. Mr.Amlan Ray – Faculty of National Economic Planning (NEP) was the anchor of the seminar and pointed the discussion towards the issues raised by The IIPM Think Tank. The colloquium questioned the rationale on the inclusive intent of the budget and focused on the following areas:
1. Does the budget proposal have adequate allocation and policy announcements for social sectors – namely health, education, and employment?
2. Is the interest of the economically weaker section given priority in the budget in order to reduce poverty and economic inequality?
3. Is there any target towards reducing social inequality which in turn can bring down economic inequality? Has the FM taken adequate measures for upliftment of the ethnically backward people namely minorities, dalits and backward community in the country?
4. Are adequate measures taken for increasing growth in agriculture sector to match the growth story of industry and services?
The audience comprised people from corporates, academia and the students. The panel discussion was mind blowing and had a huge impact on the students in terms of their understanding of the country’s economy. The discussion went on for three hours and ended with a conclusive session by the panelists. The panelists were unanimous on three points:
1. Transparency and accountability are much more vital than mere allocation
2. Quality of the fiscal deficit (reasons for borrowing) is important and not the quantity
3. There is an urgent need of a second green revolution in India.
A special prize for the ‘Best Question’ of the event was bagged by Mr.Sudhansu of FW 0709 batch. He was chosen by the panel and the prize was awarded by Mr. B.S.Ragnhavan. |

Mr. G.Gopalan enlightened the students of IIPM, Chennai through his inspiring speech on goal setting. The intention of the lecture was to motivate the students and orient them towards their goal. The lecture began with an enunciation on knowing thyself and slowly voyaged towards knowing the purpose of envisioning the future by setting the clear cut goals in one’s life and achieving it through perseverant attitude.
The session was imbued with several training exercises, short stories and inquisitive questions which were quite versatile in nature. Thinking exercises like “How eagle catches its prey?” along with several games nurtured the minds of listeners in grooming themselves while setting the goals professionally. The zest was felt by each and every student which was quiet evident from their expression echoing “I know my self....I know my self”.

But after attending the guest lecture on Marketing Strategies organized by 4Ps Club where Dr. Venkata Subramanian, CEO - Dr. Venkat & Associates put light on the topic; everyone present there actually realized the power of simplicity. A lecture delivered with utmost simplicity on a simple topic and that did nothing but only changed our entire concept and beliefs about the term called ‘Strategy’! We strategize for growth and for maximizing the shareholders’ value. But how contingent is the strategy and how to simplify its complex facets are few of the things he discussed in the lecture. He started off with examples and his short stories made it really interesting. So, we came to know how Goodyear tyre came up; what is the history behind KFC and many more! He concluded the session by telling us how to formulate a strategy that is simple and can work wonders! So, look into the future to find out what is there for you... When it comes to public speaking and proving ones’ view points, IIPM students are the best. This was proved again when the 4Ps club of IIPM Chennai organized one debate competition on the topic “Brands are nothing but hype, created to elevate price tags” on 18th of July, 2006 for the 1st year MBA students. The day saw the light of enlightening knowledge and power packed speeches as the debaters came up and expressed their views on the topic. As usual there was a keen tussle between the participants but finally Mr. Lenin Chakravorthy emerged out as the winner. Mr. Vinish and Mr. Kevin were 2nd and 3rd winners respectively. Finally there was a lot to learn from the feedback session where judges explained the core ideas behind branding.

Mr. Pawan continued the lively session with his expertise on Derivatives. He made a point that more practical knowledge is required in this big ocean as derivatives. It was an enlightening moment for all the budding MBAs on 20-07-06 when they listened to Mr.Rafi Mohammed Syed on the topic, “Essential Financial Angles (Metrics) for Budding Managers”. When already waiting for an opportunity to plug in, it was almost a fabulous backup from Mr.Rafi Mohammed Syed who took the entire batch through the ways and means of transforming dream into reality. His efforts towards taking all of them through the most important and highly complicated subject was unimpeachably made him gain more respect. The unflagging participation from the students stands as the testimony to the afore-mentioned facts.
The seminar had the following essence:
What are all the essential financial aspects one must look into while starting a business?
What are the sources of fund?
How to access it?
What is the Capital Structure?
How to maintain a balanced working capital?
What are all the sources of funds for working capital?
What are the norms prescribed by the banks for working capital loans?
Although the subject being bit tough but the prescribed reality that one way or the other, all process to translate dream into reality must have the source of funds or funds as a source. Having said this, the propensity to learn the crux of information in details could be a major task for many. This was the place where Mr.Rafi Mohammed Syed had played a vital role by disseminating those direly needed information that perfectly relished the appetite of the emerging leaders of IIPM. The intricacies of the subject were explained in a clear manner.
Apart from being a keen listener to the lecture it was also his strenuous efforts which helped sustain the harmony through out the entire presentation whilst keeping all question’s answered at times. It becomes apparent with this note about the impression that this particular presentation made to all of us. It is all about the enthusiasm and the excitement prevailed among the colleagues at the end of the session and also the positive feedback given by them.

Various portfolios of mutual funds were taken and analyzed in a crisp manner in such a way that the entire subject percolated into the mindset of the students with full of ease.

Topic: “The way you write and what you write matters!!”
The Human Factor Club organized a resume building exercise for the students on July 15th 2006 in the IIPM Auditorium. It was quite an interactive and lively session in which the experienced hands of HRIC Mr.Srinath V Iyer and Mr. Rino Suren briefed the students, the importance of building a good resume and how to craft it. As the session progressed, lots of queries were raised by the students as to how one could market themselves in this competitive and challenging environment.
The main emphasis of the resume building exercise was mainly to give or promote the advertising activity between the employer and the prospective employee wherein it would benchmark the student as a professional in setting up career goals and maintaining high standards, also highlighting the fact that it constructs in demonstrating confidence via illustrating a desire for success.
The session left an air of confidence among the students. Also that it gained a lot of positive feedback from the students who were eagerly looking forward for such workshops.
The Resume Building Exercise apprehended another artistic initiative to the Human Factor Club which is indeed very dynamic in bringing up workshops, providing an insight to the students for their future.
