“In an age when man has forgotten his origins and is blind even to his most essential needs for survival, water along with other resources has become the victim of his indifference. Water is life's mater and matrix, mother and medium. There is no life without water.”
It was yet another day of enlightment on 22nd March, 2006 for the students of IIPM, Hyderabad with learning which was definitely an eye opener to sustain and save our valuable water resources in their daily life.
The Seminar conducted by The GIDF Club of IIPM Hyderabad was on “Water Mess Management-Unleashing the Scrounger” which was addressed by the best of the expertise in the country. These were the people who valued the importance of the same not only in terms of planning but what we talk about adopting the best of the water management practices in the society.
The ideators were:
Dr.Y.S.Ramakrishna - Director, Central Research Institute for dry land Agriculture who is an eminent scientist presently working on biodiesel which can be used in dry and uncultivable lands as a maneuver for cultivation. He is from the technical fraternity of our society who had contributed in a large way to the development of the rural agriculture sector in the past.
Mr.K.Jawahar Reddy, I.A.S - Managing Director Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board is the head of the very essential bodies in the city that contributes with the help of its committed work force with a regular supply of wholesome water and a reliable service for the disposal of domestic sewage at reasonable costs .The board also protects the environment and undertakes to minimize any damage to the flora and fauna and takes an active role in making redressal for any unavoidable damage.
.
Mr.Kuldeep Bhartee-General Manager I.T.C Kakatiya, which is the only hotel in south India to be awarded ISO 14000 certification (Environmental certification). Mr. Bhartee has been highly an active personality in implementing various innovative water conservation efforts and projects in ITC and by ITC for the welfare of the society.
Mr.K.S.Shyam-Head H.R Agro Tech Foods Limited is one of the ardent practitioners in implementing various training programs conducted by Agro Tech Foods Limited in educating the common man in small villages in an around Hyderabad about the simple water conservation practices that people can implement to foresee a future with abundant water without any scarcity for the same .
The seminar started of with our beloved Dean Prof. Amit Baruah welcoming the esteemed guest speakers and the keen participants present in the seminar. He gave very interesting insights on our very objective of conducting this seminar. He had come out with interesting fact that our own Hussain Sagar lake contains 20 micrograms of uranium per litre of water and has proposed an unique initiative to clean up the same. Prof.Amit Baruah made all of us realize about our rich and pure perennial rivers that we have like the mother river Ganges and the father river Brahmaputra, but we have not been respecting them as we do to our parents. The very fact lies in that they have become impure beyond the scope of purification. He throwed up a question to the audience about how justifiable is it to use 4 litres of water to flush a litre of urine. He was very emotional in bringing out the point that even after 60 years of independence, still guaranteed drinking water in more than 1.5 villages in our country is still a dream inspite of number of modern technologies which have been implemented but to our surprise they have only been successful in reducing the life line to a shear gutter. He ended his address by throwing a challenge to the great minds present at the occasion to start the process of self analysis and self transformation to make this movement a success.
Dr.Y.S.Ramakrishna gave an insight on the past and the present statistics of the ground water consumption by the different strata in both the rural and urban areas of our country in comparison with the global scenario. He also enlightened us on the various water conservation practices being adopted in the rural sector like water sheds, etc. He also emphasized on the implementation of environmental science and technology to improve the present methods being used in water conservation.
Mr.K.Jawahar Reddy the spearhead in the Hyderabad Metropoliton city, emphasized on the new initiatives being taken up to blend the traditional and
Improved knowledge for efficient management of the water resources keeping in mind the present scenario and the future sustainability of meager and dwindling resources in Andhra Pradesh. He also briefed us on importance of technical guidance in the implementation of medium term measures and the importance of technical back-stopping and financial support in the high input measures.
Mr.Kuldeep Bhartee actually had made us realize the role and responsibility of an individual in the successful implementation of the best of the methods of water management. He gave us some present implementations that ITC is into to conserve water and their success ratio from the year 2003 to 2006. His message to the keen participants of the seminar was-“Inspite of any Advanced Technology in use the success of water management lies in the commonsense of the common man that he uses in the routine consumption of water.”
Mr.K.S.Shyam talked about the drinking water quality and its effects. He also had given a valid scenario where excessive use of water has seen the degradation of environment costing the world billions of dollars. He also stressed on the point that water is no more a natural resource but is becoming a branded commodity in the society citing the example of our very own MNC brands who are selling water at 1/4th of the price of petrol. He said that our primary objective to effectively manage the available water resources lies on how well we revolutionize our entire life styles and use water as a highly need based utility and also educate every individual about the importance of conservation of water and actually reward them who consume to the optimum. If not so he said that there is a clear indication of water to be more and more expensive as the availability is going to be a challenge.
The seminar conducted by GIDF Club of IIPM Hyderabad is just a beginning to the new era of blue revolution which can make a considerable impact in achieving our primary objective of water conservation. |
