The Indian Institute of Planning & Management (IIPM), had recently organized “A Success Seminar” by Mumbai Dabbawalas at Sathya Sai Auditorium in the capital on 7th December, 2007 for the would-be management leaders. Mr. Pawan Aggarwal, CEO of Mumbai Dabbawallas started the session by the presentation and a documentary movie which showed their hardships and dedication towards their job throughout the day. This movie was an insight into the life of dabbawalas wherein they showed how a common man with his common skills can do an extraordinary job of serving others. They called themselves as the “annadattas”. The finely-tuned system earned them a Six Sigma rating from business magazine Forbes. Some key points were covered by him that they rely on low capital and use cycles, wooden carriages and local trains to achieve their target. There are several groups that work independently and network with each other to achieve one goal. There is no retirement age as such. People work as long as they want. The dabbawallas have a credit society which gets them through money crunches. He also discussed the process of delivering the dabba on time which goes like the first dabbawalla picks up the Tiffin from home and takes it to the nearest railway station. The second dabbawalla sorts out the dabbas at the railway station according to destination and puts them in the luggage carriage.  The third one travels with the dabbas to the railway stations nearest to the destinations. The fourth one picks up dabbas from the railway station and drops them of at the offices. The process is reversed in the evenings. It was a very enlightening and enriching experience for the IIPM students which shall help them a lot in making their future brighter.

Dated:15th Dec 2007

To continue with the legacy of our guest lectures, this time we had none other than Mr. Umesh Arora, an MBA from NITIE, threw light on the topic “Supply Chain Management”. Having an experience of 9 years he said that Supply chain management (SCM) is the oversight of materials, information, and finances as they move in a process from supplier to manufacturer to wholesaler to retailer to consumer. Supply chain management involves coordinating and integrating these flows both within and among companies. He also emphasized on the fact that the ultimate goal of any effective supply chain management system is to reduce inventory. Mr. Arora informed students that there are two main types of SCM software: planning applications and execution applications. Planning applications use advanced algorithms to determine the best way to fill an order. Execution applications track the physical status of goods, the management of materials, and financial information involving all parties. His lecture was an eye opener for all and each student was delighted and thankful to him.

Dreams, Desires and Aspirations
20th November 2007

A Guest lecture on Dreams, Desires and Aspirations was organized by IIPM Satbari Campus, New Delhi. It was a wonderful experience where the Management Students understood the relevance of the Bhagwat Gita in the modern day world. Mr. Lokeshav told the students that in today’s world, we are so busy, that we often tend to forget our culture and although we are studying management but we till date haven’t realized the very fact that Lord Krishna and Mahatma Gandhi were such great leaders. Mahatma Gandhi is known as a national leader but today only we realized that he was a great management leader as well. Students also got to know the meaning of “samarpan”, and its importance today, not only does it gives patience but also makes you feel safer. It makes you loyal and down to earth. It increases your patience level like ocean. It brings a natural purity in your relationship whether it is your parents, colleagues etc. The speaker also talked about how the shlokas have changed their meanings in the modern day context which is not right and so it is important that you understand the right meanings of these shlokas and implement the same in your lives. It was a good experience for the students to know about the things which all of us today have forgotten due to our so called modern day busy lives.

India Everywhere- Opportunities and Challenges”
20th November 2007

Yet another week of educational seminars at IIPM and this time none other than Dr. Amir Ullah Khan, faculty IDF Research, visited as the guest lecture. A graduate in Electronics Engineering from the Osmania University he talked on the topic,” India Everywhere- Opportunities and Challenges”. He believes today, India’s appeal stretches from Wall Street to Broadway; from Capitol Hill to Cannes. Policymakers, Economists, Businessmen and Journalists - all are univocal in their opinion - India is everywhere. The prevailing global environment and sentiment towards India presents a unique opportunity to secure disproportionate attention towards India.

3rd November 2007

The students of “The Indian Institute of Planning & Management” New Delhi had a Guest Lecture session, which was conducted by Mr. Rajesh Tripathi, Dy. General Manager (HR) who gave the students knowledge regarding how we should face an interview, what all problems one has to go through while giving an interview. It was an interactive session with the students discussing, how to tackle various questions asked in the interview. The lecture was useful and informative, it was interesting to know that something like a person’s dressing sense can change the attitude of the interviewer and also can drastically change the future of an individual by making him land in a big company at a good post. Mr. Tripathi gave the students knowledge about real and practical work environment. The students were fascinated with the discussion. As the session continued more curiosity was built amongst the students. Speaker asked the students to think about themselves as brand and think the way they think about a brand and product in marketing. That is through 7P’s. He gave 7P’s for HR which are very innovative and self explanatory in nature, a must for every management student to know, SEVEN P’s OF HUMAN RESOURSE (HR); PERSON, POSITION, PLACE, PROMOTION, PEOPLE, PROCESS, PRESENTATION. Mr. Tripathi concluded his lecture by suggesting the students that they should look for Total reward rather than Total remuneration, candidate should always give priority to non-financial rewards, relational rewards than financial, transactional rewards because financial reward will always come with performance and the criteria for looking out for right rewards segment in respect of companies is to target yourself with which company and position yourself.

  “IIPM Students Turning Into Leaders”

  “Effective Leadership”
26th October 2007

The students of “The Indian Institute of Planning & Management” New Delhi had a Guest Lecture session, which was conducted by Lt. Col. P.K. Baja, General Manager (HR). The lecture taught the students that working for earning a living is not the only purpose of life. The purpose of life is to gain happiness and enjoy the work one is doing. Col. Baja made the students aware of the ways and means through which they can achieve happiness and passion at work. He gave them some secrets of success, the ways through which an individual can achieve happiness and tips to one minute management. The lecture was fascinating; it taught the students that making yourself happy as well as people around you is very important in life. If one goes on seeing the learning’s from the lecture then they are enormous and cannot be completed easily. It also included how can a person achieve happiness from very small things in life which if we bring in our daily life give us and people around us immense happiness. Secrets of success are no rocket science they are small simple means and one minute management is one of them. To become different from others, you should have some qualities which others don’t have. It is not necessary to prove yourself by doing different things, we can prove our ability by doing the same things differently from others. It is very important to have these kinds of guest lecture to understand the basic ethics which we are forgetting nowadays, we all know these ethics like never cheat anyone, always speak truth, help needy people, try to be happy and make others happy etc., but we never bother to think of these matters in our life. Apparently these are the things, which appear as obstacles in our path of success in our life and hamper our progress.

That’s why these are really important to take care off.
